Donor Stories—Rubin

Profile of Herbert Rubin

As one of the longest-practicing attorneys in Manhattan, for 69 years and still going strong, Herbert Rubin knows a thing or two about the law. But he is also a generous philanthropist, active board member and devoted husband. Herbert and wife Rose (retired Justice Rose Luttan Rubin) have been married for almost 70 years, and they have 3 children, 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Like many community members who are donors, Herbert became involved with the Health System over 35 years ago as a board member, first of LIJ and, after the merger, of Northwell Health. After making annual donations for over 30 years, Herbert has taken advantage of the law allowing those age 70½ and older to contribute monies directly from their IRAs to a charitable organization like Northwell Health.

Herbert has directed gifts from his IRA to Northwell Health in four of the years that such contributions have been permitted. "This is a very sensible way to carry out my strong interest in supporting the Health System. It is a way to make a gift of money with the greatest impact."

A graduate of City College and New York University School of Law, Herbert is a founding member of Herzfeld & Rubin, P.C. and has argued in front of many courts, including the United States Supreme Court. He has also been on the faculty at NYU Law School and Rutgers Law School.

Herbert and Rose also support, among others, NYU (they are both graduates of the law school that brought them together), City College and the UJA. In his spare time, Herbert enjoys golf and theatre.
